States Announce Commitment to Accelerate Affordable Clean Vehicles
Statement of EDF General Counsel Vickie Patton
(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – Today, 11 governors announced the Affordable Clean Cars Coalition, a group of states committed to advancing clean vehicles in a manner that cuts harmful pollution, saves consumers money, and supports manufacturing jobs. The announcement comes the day after the U.S. Senate passed resolutions seeking to overturn Environmental Protection Agency waivers allowing California to set clean air standards protecting millions of people from dangerous vehicle pollution.
“These governors are driving us forward with cleaner cars despite headwinds coming from Washington, D.C. Their leadership will help encourage many more affordable consumer options and increase charging access while saving lives and protecting children's lungs and the communities where they grow up from smog and soot. Importantly, this collective effort will help reduce the pollution that causes stronger hurricanes, more intense droughts and flooding, and more frequent wildfires. That’s good news for everyone,” said Vickie Patton, Environmental Defense Fund’s General Counsel.
The coalition’s announcement identified some of the steps these states would take, including developing and adopting next generation standards, defending state authority, and taking steps to increase model availability and support home and public charging. The states include California, Colorado, Delaware, Massachusetts, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, and Washington.
With more than 3 million members, Environmental Defense Fund creates transformational solutions to the most serious environmental problems. To do so, EDF links science, economics, law, and innovative private-sector partnerships to turn solutions into action. edf.org
