Colorado Selects Key Electric Transmission Projects to Unlock More Affordable, Clean Power
(Boulder, CO — July 10, 2025) Today, the Colorado Electric Transmission Authority, an independent state entity that plans and develops electric transmission, announced six project concepts to prioritize for development.
“This is a key step toward more affordable, reliable, clean power for all Coloradans,” said Veronica Ung Kono, Legal Fellow for U.S. Clean Energy at Environmental Defense Fund. “Colorado needs a strong backbone of transmission lines to lower electric bills and keep the lights on as extreme weather worsens. By unlocking more wind, solar and battery storage, these transmission projects will curb toxic air pollution and drive progress toward Colorado's climate goals.”
Background
- Colorado is experiencing tremendous increases in electricity demand, with the state’s peak electrical demand expected to grow by 40% by 2040.
- Transmission is critical to help Colorado access low-cost, renewable energy through Western energy markets and maximize savings.
- Transmission will help Colorado meet its goals of 80% renewable energy by 2030 and cutting 100% greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
Approved transmission project concepts
- Poncha – Midway Line
- Montrose – Curecanti – Poncha Line
- Montrose – Maverick – Lost Canyon – Shiprock Line
- San Luis Valley Alternatives
- Craig – Coyote Line
- Ault - Archer Reconductor/Ault - Terry Ranch Reconductor
